ENL is accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever, arthralgia, weight loss and malaise, and affects patients with MB forms of the disease (BL and LL). They present with acute onset of disseminated erythematous nodules that may ulcerate and discharge sterile material that contains degenerating acid-fast bacilli and polymorphonuclear neutrophils. These findings are useful for diagnosis since they are rare in all other types of leprosy lesions. Some patients may have recurrences over several months.
